We’ve all been there. You’re staring at the blank, white wall with absolutely nothing stirring in your brain. The seconds on the clock seem to be ticking away like sand falling through one’s hand while you can’t think of anything to do. It’s not fun.

It doesn’t have to be like that. Robert M Pirsig, an American philosopher and writer, once said, “Boredom always precedes a period of great creativity”. You can always change that period of utter boredom into one where you implement pure creativity. Here’s a list of 12 creative things you can do when you’re struck with boredom.

1) Do some exercise.
Exercising is a great way to spend your time, and it has tons of benefits. It not only boosts your physical health, but it also relieves stress, enhances your memory, helps you sleep better, and improves your mood.

Don’t worry if you’re not into physical activity and can’t imagine doing vigorous workouts with dumbbells and heavy equipment. No one is asking you to do that. Instead, you can do beginner workouts that you can find easily on YouTube.

2) Read a good book.
When you read a good book, you can easily get lost in the world of fictional characters and their lives. Not to mention, it helps you expand your views on the world and grow as a person. It provides the perfect escape from boredom.

3) Play a board game with your family.
People aren’t spending as much time with their families as they used to, so get your family together around a coffee table and play a board game. You can play a classic like Monopoly which goes on for hours and is the perfect way to kill time. If you want to play a shorter game, Snakes and Ladders is the way to go.

4) Put together a puzzle.
Assembling a puzzle is a great method to get rid of boredom. Whether you complete a gigantic 3D one or a small one, it makes you feel accomplished once you complete it. After, you can even buy puzzle glue and glue it all together so you can frame it! A perfect boredom killer and a great decoration for your room.

5) Bake a cake or some cookies.
For all those people out there who love dessert, baking a cake or some cookies is extremely rewarding. Not only would you get to free yourself from the shackles of boredom, you’ll also get a sweet reward at the end. The Internet is full of easy recipes that anyone can follow.

6) Paint or draw a picture.
If you’re an art lover, go and grab your pencils, colors, paints and whatever you need to create a masterpiece. Be creative and hang your finished work on a bare wall.

7) Take some photos.
Take out a camera or your phone, and do a photography session at home. You can go around photographing interesting objects around your house. You can even hold a more professional photoshoot with a DIY backdrop and use your family members as models.

8) Build a fort.
Your childhood is incomplete if you’ve never constructed a fort out of mattresses, cushions and bedsheets. Even if you’re a teenager, making a fort can be a fun way to spend your day, and it can bring back sweet childhood memories.

9) Create a bucket list.
A bucket list is a list of things you hope to accomplish before embarking from this world. It could consist of simple goals such as learning to bake, or it can have huge ambitions such as visiting every country of the world. Whatever your goals are, write them down.

10) Write a story.
Take out a fresh sheet of paper and some sharpened pencils and think of an interesting story to write down. It’ll replace your boredom with creativity. Once you’re done with your story, share it with your friends and family.

11) Do a fun science experiment.
The Internet is full of easy science experiments you can follow and get your thirst for curiosity fulfilled. One example is creating a mini volcano using soda and mentos. You can even use some clay to give the soda bottle the shape of a mountain.

12) Dance or sing.
A fun and relaxing way to spend time is to jam to some music and put your dancing skills to the test. You can even do some karaoke with some family members and exercise your vocal cords.
