What is Color Psychology?

Have you ever noticed that color affects your mood and inner condition? Scientists have proved that color can affect feelings and emotions. "Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions," the artist Pablo Picasso once remarked.

The choice of color tone dramatically affects the psycho-intellectual state of the individual. Psychologists have determined that an environment restrained in color leads to relaxation, encourages a creative atmosphere, and improves people's communication. The color tone is able to influence feelings, not logic. Studies have shown that 80% of color is “absorbed” by the nervous system, and 20% by vision. There is a certain relationship between color and perception. It has been established that every color tone has subconscious associations. Color, like shape, has an emotional effect on any person. It is able to instill feelings of comfort and peace, can attract or repel, or disturb and excite. This can be clearly observed when going through booklets, watching good promotional films or looking at posters, and glancing at the expressive spatial and color solutions. How is color believed to impact mood and behavior?

White represents purity or innocence. It gives a sense of space, add highlights, and attitudes such as bland and sterile. Some positive meanings that white can convey include cleanliness, freshness, and simplicity. The color white is seen as 'blank', symbolizing a new beginning or a fresh start. On the negative side, white can seem stark, cold, and isolated.

Black can evoke both negative and positive associations. Positive associations include attractiveness, elegance, and sophistication. Also, it's related to power (from priests to judges and tuxedos to credit cards). However, black is often used to symbolize all things negative. This somber color has been tied to death and all things evil/bad. It evokes strong feelings of darkness, fear, and sadness. For example, black crows and cats are often seen as omens of death and bad luck.

According to German scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, "Black is a real sensation, even if it is produced by the entire absence of light. The sensation of black is distinctly different from the lack of all sensation."

Red is considered the warmest and most contradictory of the colors. In fact, this fiery hue has more opposing emotional associations than any other color: red is linked to passion and love as well as power, anger, danger, excitement, energy (elevated blood pressure, enhanced metabolism; increased heart rate, increased respiration rate), aggression, dominance, seduction, and desire.

Blue is described as a favorite color by many people and is the color most preferred by men. Research has shown that people are more productive in blue rooms, as it calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. It is a sign of stability and reliability. Blue can also create feelings of sadness or aloofness. Consider how a painting that heavily features blue, such as those produced by Picasso during his "blue period," can seem so lonely, sad, or forlorn.

The color green may positively impact our thinking, our relationships, and our physical health. Green is thought to relieve stress and help heal. Shades of green are natural and calming; motivate and give us positive feelings and emotions.

Some of the key characteristics that are often associated with the color yellow include attention-grabbing, energetic, cheery, and warm feelings. It can also evoke negative feelings such as frustration.

Purple tends to occur rarely in nature, so it is viewed as rare and intriguing and associated with wealth, royalty, wisdom, bravery, and spirituality. In writing, the phrase "purple prose" is sometimes used to describe writing that is extremely imaginative or even prone to exaggeration or outright lies.

Orange can be a very strong and energetic color. It's often described as bright, happy, and uplifting. In some cases, it can seem too bright and overwhelming. However, this color is frequently used spiritual practices including meditation and compassion.

People often associate the color pink with qualities that are often thought of as feminine, such as softness, kindness, nurturance, and compassion. Pink is also considered the color of joy and is sometimes related to childhood.

In conclusion, color can play an important role in our life. Individual preferences, memories, and personal associations affect the choice of favorite color. Humans often select and purchase goods in their favorite colors that evoke certain moods or feelings. Therefore, each person reacts to the same color in different ways. Experts have found that while color can have an influence on how we feel and act, these effects are subject to personal, cultural, and situational factors.
